ACFN Success Stories-Featuring Lori Cyprein

What inspired you to become what you are today?
I have always had a love for the outdoors. Even as a child, I can remember telling people that working with the trees and the wildlife was something that I really wanted to do. I wanted to know everything there was to know about them. I wanted to preserve the beauty that they give to our surroundings.

What is your current position?

I currently work for Syncrude Canada Ltd. as a Research Technologist and field coordinator. This consists of a  variety of reclamation research activities on the Syncrude lease. Which include planting/measuring trees, fish surveys, vegetation surveys, wetland assessments and, aid in the annual bison round up (just to name a few).

What credentials do you have?

High school diploma
Northern Alberta Institute of Technology Diploma: Biological Sciences-Renewable Resources
Thompson River University Degree: Natural Resource Science

How long did it take?
NAIT Diploma -- 2 years
TRU Degree -- 3 year

Would you recommend this career to other people?

I sure would, being able to be outside hiking in the bush or fishing on the river AND getting paid for it!! Who wouldn’t want that!!

If you could give some advice to ACFN youth what would it be?
Follow your dreams… if you believe it can happen, it will. There is so much opportunity and support out there; sometimes you just have to ask for it.

Funding and scholarships are available for First Nations; all you have to do is apply. Going to school would allow you to do something that you love, and don’t forget that you make tonnes of new friends along the way.

Was it easy to leave Fort Chipewyan to further your education?
No, I left Chip to finish my High School in Fort McMurray. So, I was quite young.

But, like anything in life, change is hard to deal with. However, once you get through the initial shock of a new environment (and the very first day of school, regardless of its level), the days get easier and it becomes a part of you. And, you can have FUN.

Would you like to thank someone?
I would like to thank my siblings, my boyfriend, my family and especially my parents for their continuous support through out my college and university career. With out them, I would have not been so successful in completing my education. They were always there for me, and helped me whenever I needed them. THANK YOU!

I would also like to thanks ATC for funding me, without their contribution my decision to continue my education wouldn’t have been so easy.
